Technical Event: High Rise Building Design

Melbourne’s skyline is an ever-changing space, with high-rise buildings becoming more prevalent throughout Melbourne’s CBD. The design and construction of these buildings present unique challenges for architects, engineers and builders alike that are not encountered on typical construction projects. Issues such as lateral stability, foundation design, construction sequencing and coordination between consultants are crucial pieces of the puzzle in the design of these buildings, that if not diligently addressed early, can lead to problems affecting the feasibility and cost of the project.

Elliot Smith, Director of Matter Consulting, has worked as the lead structural engineer on multiple high rise buildings across Melbourne, the largest being a 42 storey apartment building in the Docklands. Elliot’s pragmatic and outcome driven approach has seen him gain a holistic understanding for the design and construction of these buildings. Elliot’s presentation will provide an insight into the unique challenges that all consultants face in delivering these projects, from engineers and architects in design and utilisation of BIM collaboration through to working with the project manager and builder in construction program and sequencing, and the importance of coordinating the design approach to deliver a successful project.
